PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording/reproducing device which eliminates the labor for removal operation, while realizing the reduction in thickness and prevents a cartridge tending to emerge from a slot from abutting the finger for operating an open operation knob. SOLUTION: This recording/reproducing device allows the insertion and removal of the cartridge 7 by upward projection of a second cabinet 1 by a prescribed quantity from the top surface aperture 10 of a first cabinet 2 in inserting and taking out the cartridge 7 and sinks at least part of the second cabinet 1 into the first cabinet 2, at the time other than the same to enable reduction of the thickness. The open operation knob 73 is arranged on the lateral point of the first cabinet 2, adjacent to the slot 6a which is arranged at the front location.
