PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular alignment type ECB mode liquid crystal display device having excellent electro-optical characteristics in which the viewing angle characteristics can be easily improved. SOLUTION: A phase difference plate having the following characteristics is disposed in the outside of a liquid crystal cell for a perpendicular alignment type ECB mode liquid crystal display device having 85 to 60 deg. pretilt angle imparted to the liquid crystal molecules. In the phase difference plate, the effective in-plane refractive indices nx, ny are different from each other and both are higher than the effective refractive index nz in the thickness direction. |
