PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composite machine whose number of read originals can be checked from an external PC. SOLUTION: The original image reader receives an image scan command, including a read designation number, from the externally connected PC 20 (ST4), and the original image reader detects and displays a designated number of read originals (ST8, ST9), reads each original one by one, stores data of each original to an image memory 3, counts the number of read originals (ST12, ST13), and transmits a message denoting 'the number of read originals is less than the designated number' and the number of the originals whose reading is complete to the PC 20 (ST21), when the number of read originals is less than the designated number (ST20) at the end of reading of the original (ST14).
