A composition for the fabrication of glass, comprising traditionally of elements forming a vitreous lattice chosen from the oxides of silicon, aluminium, boron or phosphorus, some fluxing elements, some modifying elements and some refining elements, incorporates as fluxing elements an alkaline oxide chosen from alkaline silicates and hydroxides, containing less than 20% by weight of alkaline or alkaline earth carbonates, utilizes at least one alkaline metal nitrate and an oxide of antimony or arsenic as refining agents and contains less than 2% by weight of refining elements. Independent claims are included for a method for the preparation of a glass-making compound and utilization of the composition for the fabrication of glass.
