PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recordable remaining time display method that can discriminate a recordable remaining time with high accuracy even when using coding at a variable length bit rate and to provide a signal recorder. SOLUTION: In the recording of a contents signal subjected to coding processing to a data storage, when an idle capacity P of the data storage reaches a prescribed capacity LM or below, the processing proceeds from a step ST2 to a step ST4 where whether or not the recording method is made at a fixed bit rate is discriminated. When the recording method is not made at the fixed bit rate, the processing proceeds from the ST4 to a ST5 to conduct the recording method at the fixed bit rate. A recordable remaining time is calculated when the recording method is made at the fixed bit rate in a ST6, the result is displayed in a ST7. Since the recording method is conducted at the fixed bit rate, by calculating the recordable remaining time on the basis of the bit rate and the idle capacity of the data storage, the recordable remaining time can be displayed with high accuracy.
