PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having improved electromagnetic transducing characteristics, especially high density recording characteristics, low friction against a head, excellent durability and a low error rate in a high density recording region and to provide a disk-like large capacity magnetic recording medium having 0.2-2 Gbit recording capacity. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium is of a coated type, formed by a lower layer and an upper layer magnetic layer which contain magnetic hexagonal system ferrite fine powder. The lower layer and the upper layer contain at least radiation setting resin as a bonding agent. They are subjected to calender treatment and successively to radiation exposure treatment in the manufacturing process to form the magnetic recording medium. The magnetic layer has <=5.0 nm surface roughness (Ra) and <=40 nm surface hardness measured by using a surface property tester. The method for manufacturing the magnetic recording medium is characterized of radiation exposure treatment.
