Two sheet steel plates (1,2) may be lap jointed by introducing a ribbon (10) of an epoxy glue on to the upper surface of the lower plate (1) before lapping and then making spot welds using a tool (4a,4b) which is able to exert peripheral pressure around a central laser beam (5) produced by a laser diode. The laser beam is also used to heat the glue in passing from spot to spot. Independent claims are made for the tool and diode used by the method.
