PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the image persistence of a displayed picture from being generated by enabling aging processing in a short time. SOLUTION: When an active matrix type liquid crystal panel having chiral smectic liquid crystal is manufactured, a voltage for aging is applied to each pixel by turning a TFT(thin film transistor) ON periodically. In this case, the polarity of the voltage for aging is not changed at every time the TFT is turned ON but it is made so that the same polarity is continued as shown in the figure 7 (c). As a result, an aging processing time can be shortened by suppressing the loss of the voltage for aging to be accompanied by the spontaneous polarization inversion of the liquid crystal. Thus, the voltage-to-transmissivity characteristic of chiral smectic liquid crystal becomes stable and the image persistence of the displayed picture is prevented from being generated.
