PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a playback unit which can perform self-diagnostics independently, without connecting it to a host computer by using a self-diagnostic medium in a playback unit which is not provided with a control panel. SOLUTION: The self-diagnostic programs are performed only by the playback unit and a power supply unit, on the basis of a self-diagnostic program recorded on the self-diagnostic medium by reading information recorded on the recording medium and shifting the mode of the playback unit to a self- diagnostic mode; when the playback unit discriminates that the recording medium is the self-diagnostic medium. A self-diagnostic result is reported to the outside by LED lighting or the like, or the diagnostic result is stored in a memory.
