PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for information retrieval which can speedily retrieve desired target information with high precision. SOLUTION: A CPU 101 performs control for varying the ratio at which a content word given to multimedia information and feature quantity data of the multimedia information itself are used at retrieval conditions according to a category made to correspond to a retrieval request word and the concept that is represented by multimedia information to be retrieval object.
