The production of cation exchange resin in the form of a stable gel involves suspension polymerisation of a mixture of 90-95 wt% styrene and 5-10 wt% divinylbenzene (DVB) at a bath ratio (o/w) of (1:1)-(1:2.5) in presence of 5-8 wt% acrylonitrile (based on styrene plus DVB) in the aqueous phase, followed by sulfonation with sulfuric acid in the absence of swelling agent. An Independent claim is also included for cation exchange resins obtained by this method.
