The device has a unit (30) to vary the power transmission ratio, with an inner piston (50) and a radially moveable outer piston (52). The inner piston has an outer groove (50') to accommodate material particles, which extends in peripheral direction of the piston. The end of the inner piston facing the power introduction member is connected to a tappet (42), and the outer piston slides on a shaft (44) of the tappet. The outer piston has an inner stop (60) to limit axial movement of the inner piston relative to the outer one against the operating direction of the brake force intensifier.
