A detector has a detection surface on which an image of the upper side of the body corresponding to the control field is formed; light intensities detected at points in the detection surface are evaluated to detect the contact position. The device has a light source (1) with a light conducting body (2) with an upper side approximately parallel to the control field that totally reflects light, whereby touching or pressing the control field alters the reflection of light at least at this surface. A detector (5) has a detection surface on which an image of the upper side of the light conducting body corresponding to the control field is formed and that evaluates light intensities detected at points in the detection surface to detect the contact position.
