A system, method, and computer program product are provided for compression of characters. Initially, characters are received which are to be compressed (Fig. 5, block 500). The characters are subsequently compressed using a first compression format (Fig. 5, block 514). Such characters are then compressed again using a second compression format. Thereafter, one of the first and second compression formats is selected based on an efficiency thereof.
