Method to select operating mode of vehicle IC engine by determining a parameter associated with energy loss during actuation of each intake valve

The method involves determining a first parameter related to a first energy loss associated with a first operating mode in which the second valve (18) is deactivated. It then involves determining a second parameter related to a second energy loss associated with a second operating mode in which the first valve (16) is deactivated. The valve with the minimum determined parameter is selected and thus the engine operating mode. The first energy loss and the second energy loss are based on an energy associated with the valvetrain friction which friction is in turn based on an energy extracted from the engine (10) in rotating the valvetrain. The energy losses can also be based on an energy extracted from the engine in producing electrical energy consumed in operating the intake valves(16,18).
