Delignification or bleaching of fibrous materials in aqueous suspensions of 3-40% pulp consistency with 0.1-10 % (based on dry fiber wt.) of a peroxy compound is catalyzed by mono-nuclear transition metal complexes at 10-5,000 ppm based on dry fiber wt., some of these complexes being claimed novel compounds. (LMXp)zYq (I) (LmConXp')zYq (II) L = polydentate ligand of formula (A) - (D); or ligand of formula (A), (B) or (C); R<1> - R<3> = H, alkyl, alkenyl or optionally substituted aryl or aralkyl; R<4> = an optionally N-substituted linear, branched or cyclic aminoalkyl residue or an optionally substituted heteroaryl group such as pyridyl, pyrazinyl, pyrazolyl, pyrrolyl, imidazolyl, pyrimidyl, triazolyl or quinolyl; M = transition metal, eg Fe in (II) - (V) oxidation state; Mn in (II) - (VII) oxidation state; or Co in (II) - (IV) (especially (II) or (III)) oxidation state; X = neutral or anionic co-ordinated species, e.g. CH3CN, CH3COO<->, Cl<->, Br<->, H2O, OH<->, HOO<->, OCN<->, SCN<->, (PO4)<3->, NH3, (NO2)<->, NO, O<2-> or (O2)<2->; Y = a counterion or molecule, e.g. (ClO4)<->, Br<->, Cl<->, (PF6)<->, (NO3)<->, (BPh4)<->, (SO4)<2-> or CH3COO<->; p = 0-4; z = a complex charge (+, 0 or -); q = z/charge on Y; m and n = 2,3 or 4; p' = 0-12.
