A magnetic fluid seal device, comprising a groove (11) separating the surface of a member (10) without magnetic fluid (4) from the magnetic fluid (4) when two members (10, 20) are located at specified stop positions and a seal member (5) sealing a clearance when the two members are located at the specified stop positions, wherein, because the magnetic fluid is positioned at the groove and separated from the surface of the member (10) when the two members are stopped, the surface treatment on the surface of the member (10) is not deteriorated at the opposed position to the magnetic fluid when the two members are stopped to prolong the service life of the device and, because the seal member seals the clearance between the two members when the two members are stopped, the device can maintain an excellent sealability.
