A cathode frame (10) for use in holding a rectangular cathode plate (15), is rectangular cathode plate (15), is rectangular in shape and comprises 3 frame members (11, 12, 13) with the fourth side closed by a tie bar (18) and include reinforcing members such as (16, 17) extending longitudinally thereof, and each have a groove (14) to locate the cathode plate (15). Alternative forms of reinforcing members are described. The frame members are of non-ionic chemically inert material such as glass reinforced polypropylene foam.
