Process for the methanation of biogenic lumpy material in dry fermenters comprising forming loosened pressed ball-like lumpy material, is new. An Independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the process comprising: (a) a flexible casing in the form of a yarn or wettable bond surrounds the lumpy material; (b) perforated base plates on which the bulky material can be placed and perform supporting and transporting functions; (c) a perforated cylinder arranged in the center of the device; and (d) a locking device arranged between the cylinder and the base so that the base can retract.
