Joining strength and accuracy between starting and finishing ends (S1, S2) of a sheet material (S) are achieved by keeping the distance between these ends (S1, S2) at a predetermined value by means of control pins (63). After the end portions (S3, S4) of the sheet material (S) have been contacted by top and bottom joining pawls (48, 49 and 36, 37) a cam follower (95) moves in a slot (94) to temporarily interrupt transfer of a moving force to a vertically movable base (26) while the control pins (63) are lowered and retracted from an intermediate position between the ends (S1, S2) to form a gap between these ends (S1, S2). The end portions (S3, S4) held by the joining pawls are thus prevented from deformation. <IMAGE> |
