New benzylic acid azabicyclooctane ester quaternary salts useful as anticholinergic agents, especially in treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Benzylic acid azabicyclooctane ester quaternary salts are new. They can be prepared via new benzylic acid alkyl esters and new benzylic acid azabicyclooctane esters. The benzylic acid azabicyclooctane ester quaternary salts are compounds of formula (I):; X<-> = anion; A = group (a), (b) or (c); R<1>,R<2> = 1-4C alkyl optionally substituted with OH or halo; R<3>-R<6> = H; 1-4C alkyl; 1-4C alkoxy; OH; CF3; CN; NO2; or halo, but at least one of R<3>-R<6> is other than H. Independent claims are also included for: (i) the preparation of compounds (I); (ii) benzylic acid alkyl ester intermediates of formula (II); (iii) benzylic acid azabicyclooctane ester intermediates of formula (IV). R = 1-4C alkyl.
