<p>1,2-Ethanediol derivatives represented by the following general formula [1] or salts thereof wherein R1 represents an optionally substituted heterocyclic group; R2 represents hydrogen or a hydroxyl-protective group; R3 represents hydrogen or lower alkyl; n R?4s and R5¿s may be either the same or different and each represents hydrogen or lower alkyl; R6 represents optionally substituted amino or ammonio; and n is an integer of from 1 to 6; show a retinal nerve cell protecting effect in a glaucoma model and a rat retinal ischemia recanalization model. Thus, they inhibit retinal nerve cell death and, therefore, are useful as preventives and remedies for retinal nerve diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, retinal artery occlusion, retinal vein occlusion, macular degeneration and retinopathy of prematurity.</p> |
