An abrasive material having rare earth oxides containing a cerium oxide, as a main component, characterized in that it comprises both of a solidification preventing agent for lendering precipitates of grains in the abrasive material which are formed when the material is dispersed in a dispersion medium to be soft and a dispersant for dispersing the grains into the medium. The abrasive material exhibits improved dispersibility of abrasive grains and reduced hardness of precipitates of the grains, and also allows the achievement of enhanced polishing efficiency with stability.
