An elevator device, wherein an upper car (4) and a lower car (5) move up and down inside a common hoistway (1), an upper car drive device (8) and a lower car drive device (9) are disposed horizontally at the inside upper part of the hoistway (1) so that the rotating axes of the drive sheaves (8a, 9a) thereof can be extended vertically, and the upper car (4), the lower car (5), and a counterbalance weight (6) are suspended through a main rope body (11) wound up on the drive sheaves (8a, 9a) inside the hoistway.
