A method for operating a television system (10) includes the steps of generating a television program (21) and an auxiliary signal descriptive of the content components (67) or clips of the television program (21). A user profile (63) is applied to the auxiliary signal to determine if the television program content is of interest to the PC user (50). If the content is of interest, the PC is alerted and the material stored. The auxiliary signal (67) may be imbedded in the broadcast stream (30) based on information created at the station as the TV program is created. Each video clip (21) is described based on the station's information such as scripts, closed caption text, or it may be created by a computer (30) at the TV station (10) using interpretative software or manually at the source. A television system includes a television station (12) having a transmitter (28), a television program source (20) linked to the transmitter, and a descriptive data source (30) linked to the transmitter (28).
