Optical switching apparatus for switching optical signals comprising multiplexed wavelength components, on a wavelength-by-wavelength component basis utilizes a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The Mach-Zehnder interferometer includes a plurality of phase modulators in one of its paths. Each phase modulators is operable to receive wavelength components and add wavelength components at one wavelength and selectively provides phase modulation to the wavelength components to selectively couple the wavelength components and add wavelength components on a selected wavelength by wavelength component basis from a first port to a second port.
