The Multiple disc braking system works on the principle of two or more discs/rotors, namely a supplementary disc / discs which slide over the hub of the drive disc and are coupled through the use of splines, key ways or pins on the hub of the drive disc. The two or more discs are sandwiched between the brake pads / friction material and hydraulic calipers by using two single sided brake pads on either side of the discs and a double sided brake pad inserted between the discs, these brake pads are mounted / anchored onto the brake caliper. A hydraulic pressure is applied as per normal braking however due to the increased effective contact area (double the effective coefficient of friction) between the friction material and discs/rotors exceptional stopping power is achieved. The increased surface area of the multiple discs/rotors contributes to lower brake temperatures, improved heat absorption and dissipation, which greatly reduces brake fade during repeated heavy braking applications and increases the life expectancy of the brake pads/friction material. |
