The invention relates to a method for anodising magnesium or magnesium alloy components or elements products of such a method. The method comprises the steps: 1) providing an electrolytic solution consisting essentially of either a phosphate salt or an aluminate salt, and an alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, wherein the electrolytic solution does not containing ammonia or chromate or fluoride species, 2) providing an inert cathode in the solution, 3) providing a magnesium or magnesium alloy anode in the solution, and 4) passing a current between the anode and cathode through the solution, wherein one or more of the pH, the phosphate or aluminate concentration, the current density, and the temperature are controlled to deposit a film on the magnesium or magnesium alloy anode substantially without sparking in the electrolyte.
