Cast crankshaft counterweights

A crankshaft comprises main shaft 12 having an axis and crankpin 14 having an axis parallel to the main shaft. A counterweight 16 extends between the ends of the shaft and crankpin and is attached thereto by casting during which the crankpin and shaft are placed in parallel bores in a two part mould and a thermosetting material e.g. zinc is injected or poured into the mould. Both crankpin and shaft have indented, splined or knurled end portions around which the counterweight is cast to provide torsional locking. If the thermosetting material temperature is high enough there may be partial melting of crankpin and shaft and consequent welding to the counterweight. Provides better parallelism than force fitting crankpins and shafts to sintered or stamped counterweights.
