A method of controlling the operation of an internal combustion engine is based of at least one detected combustion chamber pressure. According to this method, a combustion chamber pressure is detected at a crank angle between the end of an exhaust stroke and the beginning of the compression stroke of a piston, and/or at crank angles close to or at a top dead center position of the piston, and at crank angles after said top dead center position and before the beginning of the successive exhaust stroke of said piston. Said combustion chamber pressure data is used for controlling the engine operation.
