A spent fuel element storage container contains a filler material (4) which comprises a neutron absorber, a neutron moderator and an actinide absorber. A container, for intermediate and/or final storage of spent fuel elements, contains a fuel element-surrounding filler material (4) which comprises 2-6 pts. wt. neutron absorber, 5-10 pts. wt. neutron moderator and 74-88 pts. wt. actinide absorber. Preferred Features: The neutron absorber is boron carbide. The neutron moderator is titanium hydride. The actinide absorber is a mineral mixture of the crandallite, woodhousite and/or alunite group. The filler also contains 5-10 pts. wt. metal (especially copper) powder and/or granules.
