PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide for a user a method for economically producing an H2/CO/N2 atmosphere more advantageously than the existing method so that the range of a possible composition for the atmosphere can be widened. SOLUTION: This is the method for producing the atmosphere containing CO, hydrogen and oxygen by oxidizing gaseous hydrocarbon in a catalyst-bed reactor by means of an oxygen-containing medium. A residual material, which contains nitrogen and oxygen and which is derived from an oxygen-rich liquid that is collected from the bottom of a rectification column for producing gaseous nitrogen and then vaporized or another residual material which contains nitrogen and oxygen and which is derived from the waste discharged from an apparatus for separating air by membrane technology, is used as the oxygen-containing medium.
