PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet material separating device which is small-sized and has high reliability and an image forming apparatus having the device. SOLUTION: This sheet material separating device is provided with a transport roller 1 rotated in the normal direction as a sheet material transport direction, a pair of retard rollers having a separating roller 2 rotated in the reverse direction opposite to the sheet material transport direction and dragged opposite to the transport roller 1 by application of designated torque, a pressing means 4 for moving the separating roller 2 to press the separating roller 2 to the transport roller 1, a cam 5 for moving the pressing means 4 to release pressurization of the pressing means 4. The separating roller 2 is connected to a driving means 6 through a universal joint 3 to abut on and separate from the transport roller, and the pressing means 4 is moved to a pressurization releasing position by the am 5 to be separated from the transport roller 1. The rotary drive in the reverse direction of the separating roller 2 is controlled interlocking with the separating operation of the separating roller 2 from the transport roller 1.
