PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make images displayed on a monitor match the distal end of an endoscope in the vertical and horizontal ways without depending on the direction of the arrangement of a solid image sensor. SOLUTION: This electronic endoscope system is provided with a display direction selecting means 44a which relates the direction of the arrangement of the solid image sensor 37 made at the imaging position of an objective optical system 33 to the vertical and horizontal ways of the image displayed on the monitor and those of the distal end 17 of the electronic endoscope.
