PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electroluminescent device having a desirable light- emitting intensity in the wavelength region of the ultraviolet region to the blue light region, and provide an image display apparatus using the same. SOLUTION: An inorganic electroluminescent material 4 is composed of a rare earth element of Y and/or La and the oxides of group 5A elements of Nb and/or Ta and is represented by the formula: YxLa1-xNbyTa1-yO4 (wherein 0<=x<=1 and 0<=y<=1).
