PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alternative method for nitrating an aromatic hydrocarbon affording high conversion. SOLUTION: This method for nitrating an aromatic hydrocarbon comprises reaction of the aromatic hydrocarbon with a nitrogen oxide selected from the group consisting of NO, N2O3, NO2 and N2O4 and an oxygen-containing gas stream in the presence of a heterogeneous oxide catalyst; wherein >=0.1 mol%, based on the aromatic hydrocarbon, of water is present at the start of the reaction.
