PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for treating sheet paper or the like, in which operation efficiency can be enhanced. SOLUTION: A sorting device 100 is equipped with a readout recognition device 106 which reads an image described on the mails and recognizes sorting information necessary for sorting of the mails on the basis of the read image. The mails are sorted into corresponding sorting part pockets 108 on the basis of the sorting information recognized by the readout recognition device 106. The mails, in which it is recognized by the readout recognition device 106 that the sorting information is not described, are sorted into the sorting pockets 107a and 107b of an exclusive exclusion accumulation part 107.
