PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an easily handleable separation membrane element with a simple structure, the shape of which is stably retained even under a large quantity of water flow, and which makes a filtering treatment efficiently, and to provide a separation membrane module using the same. SOLUTION: A flat membrane 11 filtering a fluid containing a solid is a separation membrane element 10 provided on at least either face of a supporting board 12 supporting the flat membrane 11, the supporting board 12 has plural recessed flow passages 13 through which the fluid passed through the flat membrane 11 flows in specified directions and a projecting part 14 other than the flow passages 13, and the projecting part 14 is the separation membrane element 10 joined to the flat membrane 11. Further, the separation membrane module is obtained by providing the separation membrane element 10 with a collecting part for collecting the fluids flowing through each flow passage 13.
