PURPOSE: Provided is a process of making fatty acid ester by reaction of the vegetable oils or animal fats with alcohols using ion exchange resin as a catalyst. The esters are separated from the product mixtures of ester and glycerin. The process is environment-friendly because the catalyst is recovered and reused. The yield is high when fats are esterified with low molecular weight alcohols. CONSTITUTION: The process comprises: reacting the vegetable oils or animal fats with 2-40 times(by the mole ratio) much of the alcohol and 0.1-10wt.%(based on the fats) of ion exchange resins as catalyst at 60-200deg.C for 0.5-18 hours to obtain fatty acid esters and glycerin; and separating the above reaction products to isolate the esters. The above vegetable oils are oils of soybean, rapeseed, sunflower seed, castor seed and palm and the animal fat is beef tallow. The alcohols are methanol, ethanol, propanol, n-butanol. The above catalysts are either base ion exchange resins containing OH-, HCO3- and CO3¬2- or acid ion exchange resins containing H+, K+, Na+, Ca¬2+, Mg¬2+, Mn¬2+, and Zn¬2+.
