PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coal gasification apparatus which can solve the consolidation of a char to stably feed the char to a gasification furnace and can efficiently be operated. SOLUTION: In the coal gasification apparatus comprising a gasification furnace 4 to generate a gas from a pulverized coal, a char recovery device 6 to recover the effluent char containing unburnt substances together with the formed gas, a char hopper 8 to store the char from the char recovery device 6, and an injection feeder 9 to suck the char from the hopper 8 with the use of the negative pressure of a jet of an inert gas to feed the jet loaded with the char to the gasification furnace 4 via a char conveying line 11, a valve 25 is provided between the hopper 8 and the injection feeder 9 and a valve 26 is provided on the char conveying line and, at the same time, a controller 29 which allows a jet of the inert gas to flow into the hopper 8 by closing the valve 26 on forming the consolidation of the char in the hopper 8 to break the consolidation and recovers the fluidity of the char is provided.
