PURPOSE: A method for controlling intake air is provided to prevent the shock of shift and the drop of an engine rpm when a gear position is shifted from 'N' to 'D'. CONSTITUTION: A method for controlling intake air comprises the steps of: controlling an intake air control unit by initial air calculated by adding additional air calculated by a rising learning variable to the air of 'N' position if a gear position is shifted from 'N' to 'D'(S215,S220); determining whether an engine rpm drops, and learning the rising learning variable to increase the initial air when the gear position is shifted from 'N' to 'D' again if the engine rpm drops(S225,S230); decreasing air by an exponential function including a decrease learning variable(S235); and determining whether the engine rpm reaches a target rpm after a predetermined time, and learning the decrease learning variable to rapidly decrease the speed of the exponential function if the engine rpm does not reach the target rpm(S240).
