Tool plates able to transfer metallic films to a substrate are mounted on a heating and supporting plate (1) which has rows of holes capable of receiving two types of fitting (4,5) designed to secure the tool plates in place. One of the fittings (4) is able to exert finely controlled side pressure on to the tool plates and the other (5) clamps them with downward pressure. Varying sets of tool plates may be positioned using a templet (9) typically a sheet of transparent plastics such as "Mylar" "RTM". The templet is located on the heating and supporting plate (1) by a gripping bar (10) and the tool plates are brought to position by making two marks at their corners coincide with complementary marks on the templet.
