PURPOSE: An apparatus and method is provided to achieve an optimized air conditioned indoor environment regardless of the height of the ceiling of indoor area. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus comprises a ceiling height sensing unit, a control unit for taking, as an input, the signal output from the ceiling height sensing unit and controlling the rotational frequency of the motor, and a ceiling height input unit for manually inputting the height of the ceiling. A method comprises a first step(S10) of judging whether a mode is set as a ceiling height automatic sensing mode; and a second step(S20 to S35) of receiving the signal of ceiling height which is manually input and controlling rotation frequency of the motor if the mode is not a ceiling height automatic sensing mode, and receiving the signal of ceiling height which is sensed and controlling rotation frequency of the motor if the mode is set as a ceiling height automatic sensing mode.
