PURPOSE: A pay phone having a function to originate character messages is provided to have a display unit and a character input unit in the pay phone, so as to transmit character messages to cellular phones from the pay phone, so that users can transmit character messages at a charge of the pay phone. CONSTITUTION: A display unit(1) is arranged at an upper part of a pay phone body to display characters. Numeric keys(2) are arranged at a center of the pay phone body to input telephone numbers. Character input keys(3) are arranged at a lower part of the pay phone body, to input characters and display the inputted characters on the display unit(1). A selection button(4) is arranges at one part of the pay phone body, to selectively use telephone numbers or characters. If the character input keys(3) are selected, a character message is transmitted to a portable phone from the pay phone.
