PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reproduce images smoother than inputted image data without increase in the amount of data with respect to an apparatus and a method for reproducing images wherein images containing a larger number of levels of gradation than that in inputted image data are outputted and reproduced. SOLUTION: The apparatus and the method for reproducing images involve a buffer memory 2 that stores inputted image data equivalent to a plurality of lines, an image data holding means 3 that takes image data in regions in specified size out of the buffer memory 2 and holds the data, a specific portion detecting means 4 that detects from specified regions in the held image data specific portions in which the gradation in the image data is gently varied, and an intermediate concentration data generating means 5 that generates intermediate concentration data containing smaller differences than the minimum value of the differences between the levels of gradation in the image data based on the result of detection by the specific portion detecting means 4. Based on the intermediate concentration data, images with the number of the levels of gradation in the image data increased are outputted. |
