PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a signal recording method and a recordable remaining time display method, that can prevent a signal recording operation from being terminated in the middle of operation. SOLUTION: When no idle area exists in a data storage and a mode of overwriting new coded data to a recording area of coded data having already be reproduced is selected, the processing proceeds from a step ST11 to a ST15. In the case of a mode where data in areas having already been reproduced are sequentially released as required to increase the idle capacity, a recordable remaining time TWR is calculated and displayed on the basis of a bit rate of recorded signals and the idle capacity in ST16, ST17, and in the case of other modes, a recordable remaining time TWR and a recordable remaining time TWT, in the case of supplying all data quantity of recording areas for reproduction to the idle capacity are calculated and displayed in ST18, ST19. When the time TWR is a specified time or below in a ST21, recording areas of the oldest file that is reproduced are released in a ST21 to increase the idle capacity. Whether the signals can be recorded to their end is determined correctly, on the basis of the times TWR, TWT.
