The reader head deterioration sensor includes a movable conducting steel ball bearing (1) placed in a set spatial orientation on a support fitted with contact sensors (2,3,4). The sensors transmit electrical signals to a data processor controlling retraction of the reading head. A unit, which has a magnet fitted above the ball bearing, detaches the ball bearing when the hard disk shows signs of deterioration. A plastic enclosure holds the bearing in a pre-defined volume. The ball bearing is about 2 mm in diameter. The enclosure supports the ball bearing so that it is under the influence of the magnet without ever being in contact with it. The contact sensors surround a hole (12) formed in a printed circuit (20) of the hard disk reader. The separation distance between the thin cylindrical magnet and the ball bearing, at rest is about 4 mm. The data processor includes a hard disk reader microprocessor. Independent Claims are included for a deterioration detection method.
