PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such a problem that, if a section judged as a character edge and another section judged including the other coexist in the same character part when an area judgment error occurs in a color character section, a pictographic character separation gap is produced in the color character section. SOLUTION: On the basis of a color image data which is read from a color original, a pattern section, a black character section, and a color character are judged by an area judgment section 14, and image processing parameters are set by a parameter setting section 19 according to the area judgment result, and then this image processor processes images according to the image processing parameters. If a character mode to give the reproduction of character priority is set by a mode setting section 20 and the area judgment result shows an area including other than the black character section, the parameter setting section 19 sets an almost same value as an image processing parameter, and at the same time, it sets the larger number of screen lines than that of the pattern of the original mode other than the character mode.
