PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a RAID(Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks) controller which enables creation and operation of a specially protected partition and enhance resistance to a fault occurring to a partition for maintenance. SOLUTION: A storage position for a utility which sets whether or not 1st and 2nd areas on a disk can be accessed is provided and information set by this utility is separately stored. According to the information, access to the 1st and 2nd areas is controlled and when access to the 2nd area is allowed, the maintenance utility stored in the 2nd area is provided to maintain a connected host. Consequently, the 2nd area can be created and operated as the specially protected partition. Thus, the tolerance to fault occurrence to the partition for maintenance can be increased.
