PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface luminous device in which the intensity of light in a specified direction is made large and the light can be utilized efficiently. SOLUTION: A surface luminous device 1000 comprises a substrate 10 and a luminous element part 100 formed on the substrate 10. The luminous element part 100 comprises a luminous layer 40, a positive electrode 30 and a negative electrode 50 for impressing an electric field on the luminous layer 40, and a diffraction grating 12 that is of a distributed Bragg reflection type and of the first order.
